I am a Lukacs scholar. It is important to keep the Institute open for scholars like myself. Lukacs was one of the greatest Hungarian intellectuals of the last century. A country that does not respect its intellectuals is not worthy of respect.

Although I don't agree with all the positions that Lukacs adopted by any means, he had an amazing stock of literary,philosophical and economic knowledge. His capacity for analysis of great acuity found him with few rivals: in particular his writing on European critical realism continues to be highly influential. He was also an active participant in important political movements of the 20th Century, not least the Hungarian Revolution of 1918-19. We need his contribution to collective memory as well as his sociology of literature.

Because Lukacs is perhaps the most knowledgeable thinker about German Idealism and a committed defender of Reason. His book "The Young Hegel" is a highlight in the history of philosophical scholarship of the last 100 years.
