As a nation that has experienced a history of repressive governments and censorships, it's worrying that the actions of these same governments should reappear in the modern Hungarian State - especially when the author concerned was at the forefront of Hungarian independence.

George Lukacs was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century, as recognized by Sartre, Adorno, Heidegger and many other leading thinkers. Closure of the Lukacs archive would be a major loss to scholarship and a disgrace to the Hungarian nation.

As someone who studies both archive management and philosophy, it would be indeed sad if an archive dedicated to the thought and memory of this great philosopher of Hungary would be lost and left institutionally unsustained.

Extra care should be taken to preserve the ideas of great men. This is especially true when their ideas pass from view and a new fashion lights the stage. The Lukács archive should remain.

During my PhD at the London School of Economics
in the late 1970s I found Lukacs work on the the State and culture
of Capitalism to have been indispensable along with Habermas, Goldmann and The Frankfurt School, it unlocked the hidden irrationality of this Modern ideology! His writings were very readable and penetrated the mists and fog of propagandists who believed, and continue today, to believe their own propaganda!

The Lukacs archive is an important resource for all of those interested in European literature, philosophy, and politics and should remain open and and its material remain available to scholars and to the interested public.

I am an academic who understands the contribution that Georgy Lukacs made as a creative marxist thinker who has at the same time contributed significantly to modern social science. I hope this is not a political action by a contemporary government that is perhaps unsympathetic to the views that Lukacs espoused. That should not matter. France, even conservative governments in France honour their intellectuals many of whom are from the left. In general the contributions of French intellectuals are treated with respect.

Preserving the intellectual history of leading thinkers in any area is part of our shared human responsibility. Throughout history, the development of ideas, the notebooks, marginalia, partially-formed notions and dead-ends, is often lost to the next generation of scholars. Yet knowing what doesn't work is often as important as knowing what does. Hungary should be proud to host this archive, and it would be a terrible mistake to close it down.

Georg Lukacs was most certainly one of the most brilliant thinkers in the revolutionary Leninsit sense. What he did was awakened the "sublime feeling of enthusiasm" (to borrow Zizek's term). The move to shut down the archive is a brutal neocon move to further restrict not only radical thinking, but to restrict thinking itself.

I am of a generation of thinkers ...born in 1946...whose capacity to think critically was anchored in the challenging writings of Georgy Lukacs. I have encouraged those coming after me to look into Lukacs's work. I view the shut down of his archives as a criminal act.
