Greetings

No ban should be in place for something that really does not pose any risk for the natural environment, Tarantulas has been kept as pets for many years and until now there has been no scientific proof that they have harmed the environment at all.

The breeding and selling of Tarantulas has saved many species of total extinction, no tarantula at this stage will survive in our climate nor will it be able to multiply.

Please rethink your proposal.

Seems like according to this legislation I will need permits for my guinea pigs as well and may not breed them either. I have been breeding my animals ethically for quite some time. I am a REGISTERED breeder of guinea pigs! This legislation is absurd! We love our animals, we take care off them, why should we now suddenly need permits for non invasive pets that have been domesticated for years! All this legislation will do is cause law abiding citizens to become criminals or for loads of people to set their animals free. Not to mention you want people to put down their tarantulas, corn snakes amd iguanas? I thought SA is against animal cruelty!

Well, can't seem to edit my own post, so seems that they dont know the difference between a guinea pig and cattle. Cavia porcellus (guinea pig) was listed as cattle!

Regarding Species A.rugosus being banned. This species was imported legally for the past 20 years with permits issued by KZN. With no incidence of any kind with regards to biodiversity this example of keeping in captivity should be applauded not condemned. Not only has it set the standard for no incidence but the species is now firmly established and there is no need to import animals from the wild.

I completely agree with having  a system of permits in place, but the black listing is by far the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

Exotic pets are my life. Most exotic pets, when you think about the amount of care they need would not be able to survive and become invasive. Chinchillas for example need to be cooler than 26 degree or they overheat and die. I know it is not a very scientific argument but looking at the animals I have worked with personally, it is the ones considered domesticated not the exotics, that are causing the most damage to our ecosystems

I will never get rid of my Tarantulas! Why not focus on saving the Rhino and leave the domestic pets alone!

This is ridiculous. Exotic pets are just as much a part of the family as a dog or cat, if exotics must be banned then so should they as there are far more of them not being looked after than there are exotic pets that are actually kept with all their needs being met!

There are no way the Tarantulas can get out and destroy our natural habitat, so what is the difference between a pet tarantula, dog, snake, cat, mouse, fish, horse??? And if they say we are only in it for the money, what about dog breeders, cat breeders, horse breeders and fish breeders???

This is unacceptable, clearly they didn't think it through. I agree with your question about euthanizing all the animals, its absolute animal cruelty. Its just gotta stop.

As I am a caring exotic animal keeper, with a much loved and very expensive collection. I am also a vet, so understand the requirements my pets need. No one, and I mean no one will take my pets.
