Take Action to Free Marian Price McGlinchey of Northern Ireland!
To The Right Honorable Steven Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, and Our Honorable Ministers of Foreign Affairs,
We, the undersigned, petition your offices to take immediate action to support the release of Marian Price McGlinchey of Northern Ireland to the safety of her family and the care of her own physician. She has been convicted of no recent crime, and her health continues to deteriorate. She is currently held under armed guard at a hospital in Belfast. All of the events and information related to her arrest and incarceration are spurious and distorted. I have sent a more detailed description of some of those events to your office of Foreign Affairs via The Honorable John Baird.
Marian Price McGlinchey has been held in three different locations in Northern Ireland. The first location was Maghaberry men's prison, where she was held in isolation and was the only female prisoner. This location was experiencing ongoing extreme uncontrolled violence at that time, which included hostage taking. The United Nations were expected to intervene, but they did not do so. Ms. Price McGlinchey was transferred to Hydebank women's and youth detention center as her health continued to fail. Two of the charges against Ms. Price McGlinchey have already been thrown out. We believe she will be found innocent, but further trial action has been delayed by the Northern Ireland Justice system. This delay serves noone. She is held under guard in hospital due to poor health; to delay the trial is to delay her release, and it is a threat to her life. She has been previously tortured in hospital, and nearly died. Every moment under guard in hospital is a cruel reminder of prior torture, and a continuation of torture. To ignore her situation is to sanction that torture.
We, the undersigned, ask the Canadian government to take real action to secure her immediate release. The continued incarceration of Marian Price McGlinchey is an attack on Justice world wide. Please make Canada's voice heard.
