I have lived in Kensington since 1983. We welcome development that enhances the suburb and follows the prescribed planning permission. The absence of JMPD in enforcing the bylaws is being an intolerable gap in municipal governance and we demand visibility and action. We are well aware of JMPD officials taking bribes to allow unsanctioned developments to continue and see no arrests taking place despite cases being opened.Kristina Gubic (Johannesburg, 2024-07-29)

I have friends and clients in the area.I love Kensington and am devastated by the urban degeneration that is going on there. It is happening becauseof people who do not respect the area and who do not respect its bylaws.I am tired of it and I will do everything in my power to stop this nonsense!
Doris Street is RESIDENTIAL area! The impact that a supermarket will have is detrimental. The increase in traffic would have a terrible impact on the ageing infrastructure in the area. The risk of electrical fires will multiply. This will endanger the lives of all the residents on Doris Street and even the students at Jeppe Boys.
It will also increase crime in the area because supermarkets are often targeted by syndicates who focus on business robberies.

1 City procedures must be followed with all such developments2 The views and concerns of people living in the vicinity of a development must be properly canvassed before it happens.
3 The CoJ needs to be more responsive, to act decisively before such a development goes too far. It's much more difficult to deal with it when it is at such an advanced stage.
4 If the CoJ fails to act in such situations, it creates potential conflict between the developers and the people around them. The law is intended to prevent that, to make the issue a matter of legal process, not contestation between individual members of society. It's a way of protecting people's right and preventing potential harm. That's one of the main reasons for having government, to put in place fair measures to protect people and their rights from being threatened by others.

I am signing because I agree totally with the restriction of commercial encroachment into residential areas which are in very short supply in Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole. South Africa needs "accommodation / housing / shelter" rather than ANY OTHER land usage!Faithfully - John Wilkinson ("Ears & Eyes" ...)

It is important in every community or team to follow the rules and to respect the others as well. Without rules there is no freedom and peace. It starts with an exception and ends in chaos.Juergen Suplit (Kensington 2094, 2024-08-01)

Illegal businesses mushrooming all over our beautiful suburbs and city and bringing entire areas down to the level of Berea, Bez Valley, Hillbrow, Joubert Park, Yeoville... these illegal businesses do not conform to city bylaws and they attract the 'wrong' people to the area: noise, litter, crime, residents living in fear... Please help keep Kensington clean and safe.Tony de Sousa (Johannesburg, 2024-08-01)

Laws and by-laws apply to all equally and such unapproved buildings should be demolished and unapproved business practices should be dealt with harshly. There is CBDs where can do their business with being interrupted.I hope SARS is roped in to check the business owner ( tenant) and landlord whether they properly registered and comply with the tax and other regulations.
And hope JMPD , who is mandated by the council, do what they supposed to do.
