Add Abbott Freestyle Libre to the Irish Long Term Illness Scheme

I'm caring for my 10 year old grand daughter who was diagnosed last July. At night she was afraid to go to sleep in case she would have a hypo. I purchased the freestyle libre for her but because of the extra expenses of Christmas I was unable to get her the sensors for this month.

I first heard about the freestyle libre about a year ago when it was released in the U.K. At the time I tried to purchase the device but it would not ship to Ireland. I even spoke to my endocrinologist about it. I waited patiently for the device to be released in Ireland and purchased it immediately once it became available. I have been wearing the device with a number of weeks and I can honestly say it has changed my life. I know people who don't suffer with diabetes might find it hard to imagine that such a device could be so life altering but it is. I can check my blood glucose levels with such ease now, it's so discrete and I no longer have to gross out my colleagues at lunch! I have a better control of my diabetes and so I am less likely to end up in hospital because of a hypo or DKA; thus saving the government thousands. I can also check my levels an infinite number of times for the one price. I'm not paying per finger prick anymore. It allows my partner and family members to check my levels when I'm sleeping in case they have any concerns. And I can finally eat a sandwich without putting blood all over it!

People with diabetes have skin and very slow healing problems because of this It's crazy to be finger pricking many times a day every single day for the rest of our lives.
I also don't think proper diabetes management is possible without the type of data needed to have the complete picture. That data is possible with the Libre

I'm signing because this is urgently needed. I am using the Freestyle Libre myself and it is fantastic. It is a huge breakthough and would help so many of us with type 1 diabetes to live an easier life daily and with better overall control. Before using the Freestyle Libre I could go through 10 or more finger pricks a day and would use so many test strips which would also be very costly. With this new device you only need 1 sensor every 2 weeks. I am currently paying for this myself which is costing me €120 per month and something I can't afford but i need it. I'm sure there are many others out there in the same position and having to make the choice between their health and what they can afford and this should not be the case. This needs to be put on LTI ASAP.
