I qualified as a Nurse in 1998 through Lanarkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery and at present I am not working as a Nurse most of my colleagues that I trained with have pursued other careers and left the profession altogether.

We need to keep training our Nurses to get the new skills and knowledge into the NHS allowing our health care the best in the Country. Closing the Department would be a Tragedy for the NHS.

To close any university which produces top class results in absolute essential subjects is a false economy. Money should be saved on limiting the number of non-essential subjects.

#54 Glasgow nurses

Frankly it is ridiculous that the School Of Nursing is being threatened with closure. Nursing graduates of glasgow have a unique degree program as they are taught along side medics which makes for better nurses as well as doctors; the students have a greater depth of knowledge than UWS and Caledonia University. Scotland needs good nurses, and Glasgow uni has a history of providing this.

#56 please don't close Glasgow University school of nursing

2011-03-08 23:02

As a post graduate student I feel it is essential that the nursing school is saved. The school delivers a high standard of education with quality at the heart of their education delivery. Staff are committed to student development and it is essential that this school is saved to ensure future nurses are able to have access to their quality courses.

As Greek representative I had the best collaboration with Professor Lorraine Smith in the Work group of European Nurse Researcher (WENR).When she was the representative of UK (RCN).I know very well her contribution in the development of Nursing Research around the Europe and the promotion of name and tradition of your University.

Enough is enough, if the government need to save money lets stop the over inflated bonuses that fat cat bankers award themselves, even when their banks have made massive losses.

Nurses are a great asest to hospitals as well as the NHS. It is commonly known that they are the backbone of most hospital departments. By closing the Glasgow University school or nursing you are reducing the amount of qualified nurses that will be useful in helping individuals.

#63 Closure of UofG nursing school

2011-03-09 20:41

The quality of the graduates of the UofG nursing school is excellent. The proposed closure of the school would not only adversely impact on the future development of nursing but fundamentally the care for patients in Glasgow and across Scotland.
With the currently paucity of nursing vacancies and general cuts the nurses we recruit need to be of the highest quality, able to deliver excellent nursing care in an uncertain future. In this climate, the need for innovative, forward thinking nurses has never been so great.

To close a nursing school which produces these types of nurses so consistently would be a costly mistake for the people of Scotland.

#64 Threat to Glasgow University Nursing School

2011-03-09 21:51

What is the world coming to, when my old university is ignoring the noble traditions developed over hundreds of years. The high standing of Glasgow University has been attained through the standargs set, which have been the envy of many.

To threaten the Nursing School is tantamount to cultural and intellectual vandalism, and merits wideranging contempt for those who dare to consider this to be a reasonable option to address the shortfall in the university's funding.

Such a proposal must be seen as an attack on the rich heritage of Glasgow University, and should be opposed by all right thinking people.

#67 We need well qualified nurses - as wards are so short staffed

It is so short sighted to be closing the course for training new nursing staff especially as nurses are working long hours due to shortage of staff on hospital wards.

This is a profitable, highly successful degree course with a huge reputation. In the current climate why would anyone close this down? It just doesn't make sense.

#70 Lymphoedema

2011-03-10 16:39

As stated, the lymphoedema courses run at the University of Glasgow are invaluable to practitioner and service development. I am currently doing my master's in lymphoedema and all the lymphoedema modules have been crucial to my personal and professional development as a lymphoedema specialist. It is essential that they remain to provide the same to future practitioners to maintain and improve the current standard of lymphoedema care in the UK. People with lymphoedema have been forgotten about for far too long now, but in the last 10-20 years, things have improved considerably; however, to remove such a keystone of lymphoedema education would set lympohedema patient care back immensley.

#71 Quality Nursing

2011-03-10 21:03

The nursing school of Glasgow university is the gold standard for nursing education in Scotland turning out graduates who have the highest skill levels possible. If myself or my family are ever ill I know the nursing staff I want looking after me. Not in any way to take away from the achievement and dedicated caring work done by others on other courses but it does seem that the honors degree program provides an unequaled level of knowledge in their field. As I mentioned before, If ever i'm ill i'd want the best qualified people i could find on my side which is why i'm supporting them now. Don't lets lose something so successful at achieving its purpose just because it fails the bureaucratic or financial test. We want Scotland known for what it does well not what we do cheaply!

Somethings need to be cut but the pattern seems to be cutting things that affect a lot of people for little savings, like this and like cutting ALL assistant teachers in the Highlands. On the face of it they seem like very poor decisions.
