I am a violinist based in Nairobi, Kenya, and have had the privilege of working with Rafael several times.One of these was one morning when he took us (another violinist and cellist and myself) through the second movement of Vivaldi's guitar concerto in D major. That session added another layer of understanding into how I approach chamber music, specifically the small details that make music truly come alive. Phrasing, breathing together, awareness of voicing in the parts, eye contact within the ensemble and playing each and every note like it matters. All of these combined into magic on stage when we performed it with him later that evening. It was amazing to have been part of the complete transformation of this piece, from the first time we read through it. I remain grateful to have crossed paths with Rafael. He deserves every accolade and more!
