I am a Moon Gymnastics Alumni and would not be the successful woman I am today without the life skills I learned from Amy. She taught me that life isn't handed to you, you have to work for what you want. Amy built the Moon Gymnatics program from the ground up and it has been one of the best high school programs in the state ever year that she has been in charge. She doesn't just teach her team to be good athletes (look at the number of district and state titles her team has). Amy teaches her team how to be good, successful people. She emphesizes the importance of hard work, teamwork, determination, and drive. All of these qualities are applicable in the athletic world, but more than that, these qualities give her athletes the skills to succeed in their lives after graduating high school. Removing Amy Caprino would not make Moon Gymnastics a better place, it would rob the next generation of gymnasts to learn these skills and become strong, successful women.

Amy Caprino and the rest of the Moon gymnastics coaches are without a doubt the best coaches I have ever had. They not only taught me gymnastics but also lessons about life. They taught us integrity, reliability, loyalty, bravery, at times even grammar. Exceptions to the rules were never made. There were no favorites. Everyone was given the same level of respect. I see 3 issues here…
#1…. It appears that a School Board Member and mother of a ‘Club’ gymnast feels that her child should be treated differently than the other 300+ gymnasts and budding gymnasts in a highly successful program run by Amy Caprino and her coaching team. So… #2…. let’s get rid of Amy because she won’t alter the program for one child’s mother and #3… let’s also throw Nick, a dedicated Moon Gym Alumni, Coach and Judge under the bus by making him appear to be someone he is not. Does that sum this up?

Let me say I don’t know of one organization, business, corporation or board of directors that does not have some level of defined guidelines, rules or requirements that employees, associates, members or in this instance… athletes must follow. Moon Gymnastics is no different. During my daughters 9 years in this program Amy distributed a comprehensive manual that contained all and everything ‘Moon Gymnastics.’ Every parent receives this guide book yearly in November before season starts. I believe it is reviewed and approved by the Athletic Director. Every gymnast/parent on team signs a letter acknowledging their understanding of the rules and their responsibilities on team given the contents of this manual. Team and individual expectations are defined along with ramifications for breaking protocol. This includes attending practices, being on time, gym set-up/take down, personal interactions/bullying, required job assignments at meets, social media, etc. These rules apply to ALL gymnasts on Team. No one is exempt. Not sure why anyone would think they might be exempt from rules developed to protect gymnasts and add consistency, integrity and fairness to the program. Allowing a single gymnast to be exempt from the requirements and responsibilities of the whole would most certainly create nothing but resentment and division. That’s not what Moon Gymnastics is about. Moon Gymnastics is about TEAM…

We’re all faced with decisions as we go through life. In this case, no child can do it all. When it comes to picking multiple sports to participate in, and overlapping schedules are faced… choices have to be made because commitment is hard to share.

Being a part of Moon Gymnastics, my daughter and I followed the rules, worked hard and appreciated the hard work and efforts of the coaching team. Our daughter walked away from that team a confident, resilient, mature leader… filled with honesty, integrity and not at all afraid of commitment or hard work… Amy, Nicki, Kathy, Michelle, Nick, Jan, Kristen, etc. all played a part in who she is today. We thank them all.

I urge everyone to think hard as we approach the school board elections in November. VOTES matter.

I find the actions by MASD Board Member Crystal Barr to be reprehensible; she should be ashamed of herself for both her misconduct as a MASD Board Member, and for being an embarrassment to MASD. I certainly hope the MASD School Board will conduct an investigation into Crystal Barr's misdeeds, and assess sanctions against her if deemed appropriate.

My daughter was a member of MAGA for several years. I had the privilege of being a parent-supporter of the MAGA program and witnessed first-hand the way the program was conducted in a first class manner, churning out much more than just WPIAL and PA State Championships, but also top-rate student athletes who represented the MASD quite well.
