I was born and raised and still reside and work in Columbus. As a Queer and Transgender-identified person I found some of my first places of safety and community among the culture of acceptance fostered by the queer-owned businesses in the Short North district, as did many other people before me. As Columbus continues to grow and evolve and the Short North becomes more affluent and residential, I hope that it will maintain its open welcoming atmosphere and continue to be accessible to all walks of life, including historically marginalized groups such as queer and trans people, people of color, and artists who gave so much of themselves to create the art and entertainment the district has come to be known for. These rainbow crosswalks will not only serve as a memento to those who found their life, their family, and their voices in the Short North, but will send a powerful signal that the love and support generated from Columbus' history builds bridges and spreads outward, helping to move the world toward greater acceptance of all people.

My name is Trevor Morrall, the idea of a dedicated space where I can feel proud and safe is groundbreaking! Crossing the steet often puts many others, including myself, in a scared feeling of vulnerability, amped from past experiences!! This is the least we can do to offer hope and support!!(Columbus, 2018-11-09)

The short north has always been a place of acceptance and love. I was never worried about holding my girlfriend’s hand while I walked down the street, and i have had very few incidents with homophobic people. Because I live in Victorian Village, and I feel like the constant development, while good for the economy, is taking away part of the neighborhood’s character. Also, LGBTQ-specific spaces are being eliminated. I like the idea of having such a visible reminder of the elements that make this neighborhood what it is.(Columbus , 2018-11-09)
