As a keen paddleboarder we should have access to all water in the UK ,not more restricted access!!R Easter-Robinson (Rotherham, 2022-04-13)

There’s no justified reason to ban SUP and much needed access to our UK waterways for the UK public which is known to have many well-being benefits when there are other solutions like educating paddlers on how to stay safe, offering training and orientation of how to stay safe on specific waterways and the list goes on. A simple ban is not the answer.Camilla Todd (Hove, 2022-04-14)

I'm signing because access the the water should be for all, I windsurf, sail and paddle .....the decision by United Utilities can only be described as vogon based madness, all other forms of exercise on the water is higher risk and at my boat club, we can do everything BUT paddleboard....is this a risk based decision by UU or just another edict from a company and its managers who know nothing about watersports and related risk management....Timothy Ordway (Elland, 2022-04-20)

I think you should be able to SUP on these lakes. The risk is no higher than any other lake.David Allen (Carlisle, 2023-04-08)

The rule is stupid. There is no difference between a an inflatable canoe or kayak and a paddle board as far as the drowning risk goes. If anything the paddle board is stronger and more resistant to bursting and sinkingHelen Miller (Bolton, 2023-05-16)

This is quite frankly rediculous. You know what causes more harm than SUP users on two lakes? Dumping millions of litres of untreated sewage into our lakes, rivers and seas. So maybe UU should focus their attentions on that instead.Mark Kimber (Fleetwood, 2023-05-25)

I believe paddleboarding on these lakes should be allowed. There is no more risk to paddleboarders than kayakers and canoists - I do both.Tracy Cokill (Clitheroe, 2023-05-27)

It is wholly unfair and unjustified to discriminate against paddle boarders when kayaking is allowed on these two bodies of waterDave Kelly (Workington, 2023-06-28)

I am a paddle sports enthusiast and love paddle boarding for the physical and mental health benefits it’s brings. With the growing popularity of Stand Up Paddleboarding more locations are required to accommodate the growing demand. Both Ennerdale and Thirlmere are two of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District and it is a great shame for paddle board users not to be able to use the lakes. With regards to the safety element, I have been involved with many paddle sports and the none have had the same level of community that paddle boarding has. I am part of one of the largest communities in Yorkshire which has nearly 9,000 members. The key aim of any paddle boarding community is to keep its members safe and because of this safety training videos and safety training courses are regularly promoted. Any organised events have full safety briefs by qualified instructors and have a minimum safety requirement of a personnel floatation device, leash and quick release belt. These communities all over the UK promote a safety first culture and I have never been a part of a community where this has been so prevalent.Steve Foster (Leeds, 2023-08-29)

The idea of SUP bringing higher risk is not backed up by research. According to this report SUP is one of the safest /uscgboating.org/library/accident-statistics/Recreational-Boating-Statistics-2021.pdfSimeon Parrott (Bolton, 2023-09-19)

I love paddle boarding and live so close to the lakes which are ideal for my hobby. We do not harm the lakes in any way, so please don’t stop our wonderful hobby.Katherine James (Preston, 2023-12-18)

The land and water should be accessible to the citizens of the UK. We should not be banned from our country by money hungry private owners of our utilities. The ridiculous ‘reasons’ for banning paddleboarders are just an excuse to reduce access. Many reservoirs allow access if people pay quite a lot of money in England. This is not right. People need free and easy access to water for both physical and mental health. The excuse that it’s dangerous is ridiculous. It’s apparently not dangerous on Scottish reservoirs but then you cross the border and suddenly it’s dangerous. RubbishDenise Pentland (Ryton, 2024-02-14)

It’s awful that the Lake District is being restricted when it should be for all to enjoy. We should have the right to paddle on these beautiful lakes.Jennifer Moorhouse (Remote, 2024-02-15)

Paddleboarders should be trusted to take care of their own personal safety as they do on all other water that they paddle on.Daisy Best (Whitby, 2024-02-15)
