Say NO to 'make room' by City of Melbourne council!

The city council should ask the local residents’ opinions before they made the decision. Australia is a democratic country, that’s the reason we love it. The local government should not make decisions without the concent of the majority of local people. And they are not allowed to use homeless people as an excuse for their own convenience.

Society should help the homeless when it can. The issue here is not only the economy, but the other factors listed. You have chosen to highlight only one of many points described in the petition. Safety and security was repeatedly mentioned in the comments.

My heart goes out to the homeless who are earnestly attempting to rebuild their lives. I have, on multiple occasions, tried to give food and money to some of them, only for them to be rejected saying that "it isn't enough money" or "no thanks, I am not hungry." This suggests that they are well fed, they have choices. Once, I gave some notes to a homeless man near my place of work, next minute I see him walk into a store and come out with a pack of cigarettes.

The homeless people in the CBD are increasingly aggressive. I have lived in the city for more than five years and can confidently say the city's safety is at an all time low. The city is already crowded, there are certainly better places to rehabilitate the homeless than in amongst small children and young families. There are pockets of West Melb CBD that are absolutely unsafe to walk around in at night, it never used to be like this and it is saddening to see! The solution is not to concentrate them next to where 5,000+ are living. This was a decision not thought through.

Businesses aside, let's focus on residents only. The community here is comprised of a variety of people - students, families with children, young and old couples. These residents have contributed to and invested in living a full life here. Why is it that they must sacrifice their security and safety when they have worked hard to obtain a home for themselves? It goes both ways - it's not that the homeless shouldn't receive accommodation, but that it should be elsewhere because their presence causes unrest, uneasiness and stress to passers by. They need mental and emotional support and a job for income. Many of the homeless are rarely sober, they substance abuse and this is not a desirable atmosphere to have at our front door. This is not classist, just simply a matter of safety and security and creating a homely environment.

All Australian know that the government supports the homeless financially. How this money is spent is entirely up to them. Nothing is black and white.

The location of this proposed shelter is totally inappropriate and in conflict with the planning objective and development over the past 8 years. It will also create further amenity issues.

I'm signing because I am an owner/resident of the Madison Tower Complex at 639 Lonsdale street Melbourne. My wife and I are senior citizens and we have had an abundance of problems in the area culminating in many assaults, robberies, owners parking cages being slept in and robbed continuously. Security has been upgraded recently to try and lessen these serious problems. Personally, there were signs that people were sleeping in my cage of which had been cleaned out gradually by thieves over the seven year period that we have lived here, and of which police have been called upon numerous times. No more problems for us please, as we are both in our mid-seventies and wish to have some normality returning in our lives.

I’m signing because this project has not consulted residents and businesses on Rose Lane to address their concerns and the challenges of the area. This project has excluded the concerns of the greater collective people of the neighbourhood. It is an incomplete structures of case studies that only address the positive, ignoring the negative impacts that this project will impose on the neighbourhood, and ignore the true concerns.

I agree with the points in the letter - there are better options to help the homeless and better location to establish the shelters.
Moreover, it is not acceptable that the plan is not being properly consulted with the residents in the affected area.
