WHITE OCCUPATION OF A CHINESE ARTS CENTRE - A CALL TO ACTION

Comments

#604

As a previous employee of the (then) Chinese Arts Centre, I am dismayed and disappointed to learn that the serious issues surrounding the organisation that were very apparent to me as a junior administrator in the early naughties have only deepened and further harmed employees and artists who have worked with the organisation. That artists continue to be used in a tokenistic and cynical way to promote a seemingly diverse face to the Arts Council and the general public makes me deeply saddened and increasingly appalled.

I'm signing because the harms caused by these institutional failings are real, and change needs to happen.

I'm signing because I feel that by having seven Chinese artists experiencing racism by the only-white senior staff members at CFCCA that is known for promoting Chinese Contemporary Art, it is not right and it will only promote tokenism instead

As a British Singaporean this is not how a space for Chinese arts should be run. Please listen to those that this centre is supposed to serve.

Asking ESEA Artists to do incredibly taxing emotional labour/ anti racist work in an organisation and to be systemically ignored is not only problematic, and is a temperature check for the sector, those orgs who are unable to centre voices those who experience racism authentically , it endemic of a structurally racist system (in the u.k)

Standing in solidarity with these artists. Fondly remember the days when the Chinese Arts Centre was artist-led and community-focused organisation and dismayed to hear about what's happened since. Unacceptable that bullying and racist complaints haven't been addressed.

it's super dumb not to have a white occupation of CfCCA

Institutionalised racism in an organisation dedicated to art goes against everything art stands for. It's about open-mindedness, diversity and inclusion, challenging the status quo, thinking outside of norms etc. PLUS incidents of racism and bullying need to be called out in whatever areas of society they exist.

I'm signing because organisations such as CFCCA must be led by Black, Asian or in this case Chinese artists and creatives

Reading of the need of this petition, I am at somewhat of a loss at Manchester's acceptance of such a cultural loss to a nationally and historically important Chinese community.

I’m signing because I support all the actions outlined above.

This is public money, and Arts Council England needs to do (much) better at investigating and justifying where such huge amounts of money go, and how they are used. This level of cultural ignorance is unacceptable.

This organisation and its leadership should be doing better. How can it support contemporary Chinese art if it is run mostly by white staff? And if they won’t listen to the artists they consulted? It doesn’t make sense!

I am signing because I believe and support the Working Artists Group account of institutional racism within the CFCCA. I also support the actions that they are calling for from the CFCCA and the Arts Council.

I fully support this petition to highlight vital issues regarding CFCCA’s history of mismanaged institutional framework, which is seemingly supported by the Arts Council of England’s funding.

CFCCA demonstrates its arrogance and complacency by failing to publish the artists’ criticisms. Massive failure of governance.

White supremacy is a massive threat to the world at large. Underrepresentation of Asians has to end.

I am also an artistic individual and believe that anyone who comes between the artist and their community must be stopped.

I am tired of Arts Councils feigned ignorance, gaslighting and consequent exploitation of public funds. I'm done with the chokehold white academia has over "culture", and its insidious racketeering
