I’m signing because I am looking to obtain my LMHC ando believe we have the education and sufficient practice to be able to diagnose if not more than social workers.

There is no credible basis of evidence to justify the elimination of diagnosing privileges amongst LMHCs and LMFTs. This is a cruel move by insurance companies to restrict access (and thereby refuse coverage) for the average person’s mental health needs. People with mental health struggles will be even further marginalized with this legislation, exponentially so for those also in low-income populations.

Holly Lehman (Liverpool, 2021-02-04)

#639

I often feel underutilized as a professional due to law structures such as these. This also can impact our ability to function in the insurance system, making care for clients that much harder to obtain. In today's environment everyone needs access to skilled mental health providers, and this is an important step in keeping that access.

I am a Mental Health Counselor and will eventually be an LMHC. We have the same number of credit requirements and hours to be licensed as LCSWs and our training is equivalent relative to the diagnosis and treatment. At a time where mental health support is needed more than ever before because of COVID, it seems abhorrent that any body would work to restrict the number of clinicians who are trained from diagnosing and treating people in need of treatment.

I am a soon to be mental health clinician and counselor and have studied hard and enjoy working with clients in my current job. I am looking forward to diagnosing and applying my knowledge and what I have and study and put into practice. Mental health clinician and counselors should have an equal opportunity to see clients and diagnose and get paid what they are worth!!

We should be given the opportunity to treat and diagnose.

I am a mft and just finished my degree at mercy college. At my internship, i was able to correctly diagnose clients to help with their needs. My diagnosis of clients would be corroborated by an in house psychiatrist who agreed with me. In our program at mercy college we have been thoroughly educated on how to properly diagnose clients.

Mental health is so important especially during these hard times we are facing. Is about time mental health counselors and clinicians get noticed for the hard work that they do with people of all ages. This is not an easy job and definitely not for everyone. As an inspire MHC we need to be paid what we are worth feel appreciated and valued then ever before. The well-being of every individual and the importance of your Mental health status matters including mines. Mental health plays a role in all lives no matter what the circumstances are. Let’s advocate and work together for those who are vulnerable with severe mental health illnesses to the ones that have a sound mind but just need some guidance and are mentally, physically, emotionally drained and need a mental health counselor to help them through this process.

This is very concerning and very disappointed that they would discredit mental health clinician/counselors especially after working hard for that license and optioning a degree that now will cost you your career and what you were looking forward to DIAGNOSING.

Marriage and Family therapist play a vital role in the mental health field. We treat and diagnose clients with a multitude of clinical issues. We should continue to do so, going forward. We are just as qualified, if not more qualified to treat mental health issues. We not only treat individuals but also the larger systems that surround such individuals.

It is imaginative that when clients are seen they understand how their cognition is being affected from a diagnosis. Psycho-education while working together with such clients is given them full access to their journey of healing. LMFT’s are very competent not only in understanding family systems but are academically knowledgeable from vigorous studies and well trained with supervision. We work very hard for our clients well being and our society. This is not acceptable.

I am signing because I don't want this measure to affect my development as a counseling student and my opportunity to participate in internships. If this is to go through and be established, it means future hardship for passionate individuals that love helping others, and are in the process of becoming future licensed counselors. I am signing because I don't want this to go into effect, which will destroy my dream of becoming a licensed helper.
Truly,

Diagnosing is necessary part of developing research supported treatment plans and goals for patients. To become an LMFT I had to study the DSM5 and psychopathology, then utilize that knowledge making assessments in clinical practice in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Please continue the right of LMFTs to diagnose clients.

Lora Sant (Brewster, 2021-02-04)

We need to maintain our status as providers as we are qualified by years of training and practicum experience. We provide essential services to communities including those with limited resources. Children and families will suffer if we are limited in our ability to provide for them in a variety of settings and to have more incoming therapists added to our ranks to improve access at a time when so many will need services.

As a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, I will be fully trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. Limiting my employability and that of my colleagues decreases access to vital mental health services by vulnerable New Yorkers.

I'm a former NYAMFT President and licensed MFT(#000039). Current language in the LMFT law was a forced compromise when the bill was being voted on. MFTs were directed to not include the words, diagnose and treat. If we had insisted the bill would not have passed.History has shown LMFTs have fully demonstrated their ability to render psychological diagnoses. It is long past time to change the language.

It is imperative that the mentioned licensee's are able to perform their full scope of services which includes diagnosis of clients. If there is not the ability to diagnose, what are we treating, focusing on within the goals and purpose of therapy?

More than ever before, this is a crucial time for LMHC's, LMFT's, and other mental health counseling disciplines to have full authority to diagnose and properly treat the people of our communities who have greatly suffered due to the impact of COVID-19 on mental health functioning. Mental health practitioners' ability to properly diagnose lies in the foundation of addressing the mental health crises we are currently experiencing and will continue to experience as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

I am a Professor in Counseling, where I train future licensed mental health counselors .As part of their course work/ and internships we are required to train students in all phases of diagnosis. However, when they enter the field they are often not allowed to use these skills. Other states have allowed this for decades. The change in the law will help our students work to the full extent of their training and education. They are truly qualified.
