Save the McDougall as our Museum of Historical Art

I lived 3a Hackthorne Road Cashmere 4 years on late 1980s.

This beautiful and purpose built building gives permanence in design and presence and practicality in function.

Expansion of art display is natural with time however that does not require retirement of the existing.

Mark Nicholas (Hawera, 2023-01-13)

The McDougall was bequeathed in trust to the people on the condition and understanding that it would stay as the Art GAllery, just as it was. It has brought joy to countless numbers of people. The CCC has a duty to honour the spirit in which it was given, not to betray that trust.
Do the right thing.
Reinstate it in the form in which it was
given. It is part of our precious history. It is not the CCC’s to do other things with it.
Be honourable.
Tim should mastermind the reopening of this precious building for he can be trusted to honour the heritage. Thank you.

Mary Hobbs (Chch, 2023-01-15)

I visited the gallery so many times as a child and was always inspired by the art on display there. The space holds so much history for us and as we have lost alot of that since the earthquakes we need to try and hold on to what we can, it's a legacy for our children.

Maree Neumann (Christchurch, 2023-01-15)

#412

This is a built for purpose historic building and should be reopened as such.

Kent Caddick (Christchurch, 2023-01-15)

This gallery is a significant building and a beautiful addition to the Botanic Gardens experience . So much of “ old Christchurch “ has been lost , why destroy more ?

Grant Allen (Auckland, 2023-01-16)

#414

I have always loved old buildings and this one in particular. A gift should not be taken lightly.

Simon Greenfield (Christchurch, 2023-01-16)

Ruby Henderson (Christchurch, 2023-01-17)

#420

I am signing this petition because the generosity of philanthropists should be respected and the display of historical artworks is more important than the display of contemporary artwork which may never achieve the relevance or significance of historic works.

Simon Moss (Auckland, 2023-01-18)

#421

Because it is a very important part of my childhood and as adult the love and passion for art and articture...
It is a fine piece with huge memories for many whom visited it...and would continue..it is also a very big part of Christchurch history and we have already lost enough...

Debra Peterson (Christchurch, 2023-01-18)

#450

This gallery was donated to Christchurch as an art gallery by its benefactors and it must be used as one.

Margaret Dawson (Christchurch, 2023-01-20)

#457

I am signing because I have very fond memories of the old McDougall Art Gallery. It was not fit for purpose as a modern contemporary gallery but is perfect for an historical collection, combining the work of the Museum and the CAG.

Julie Foley (Christchurch, 2023-01-20)

#460

This is a gorgeous, historic building that needs to be preserved. I would of got married here if I could of.

#463

Presentation of classical art is important, beauty is important

Craig Scott (Christchurch, 2023-01-20)

#464

The reopening of the gallery and use for its intended purpose is long overdue. A disgrace that this stunning building has been locked and inaccessible for so long

Chrissie Cope (Christchurch, 2023-01-20)

#466

I grew up with the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, I briefly worked there before it shut its doors 2003. It is an Art Gallery by legislation and an Art Gallery it must remain.

Scott Flanagan (Dunedin, 2023-01-20)

#467

Christchurch was where I was born, studied, explored and learned.
I remember so many moments of understanding what art is, through the galleries in chch. This is a very special one, and also a wonderful reminder of the city that was, before the earthquake.
While it’s lovely to experience the new, it would never be without the older.

Jesse Turner (Raglan, 2023-01-20)

#471

I am passionate about this wonderful venue! It is ideal as a venue for local & touring bands, we don’t have enough venues in NZ. Also, we could showcase local artists within. I spent so much time here as a child & teen, it’s my favourite building & a massive drawcard for visitors.

Hannah Harte (Christchurch, 2023-01-20)

#473

I’m absolutely horrified that such a treasure of Christchurch is under threat. I am an artist that grew up in Christchurch and I have spent a lot if hours in that glorious gallery. Shame on the administration that show such little respect for vital heritage.

Matthew Downes (Auckland, 2023-01-21)

#475

I’m signing because CHCh needs cultural spaces like this. Art is important and all of the reasons given above. One thing to keep in mind is the disrespecting of the gift - who in the future will be willing to gift anything of consequence if this happens to it.

Maree Quinn (Lyttelton, 2023-01-21)

#476

Looks an amazing gallery, I don’t believe I’ve ever been in there! I would love for it to remain and re-open so I, and everyone else, can visit.

Vicki Shaw (Christchurch, 2023-01-21)

I experienced the wonder of the McDougall used for its original purpose in the 1960s and 70s. It was incredible and should be returned to its original use.

Monica Crawford (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#484

It’s an important heritage site in Christchurch

William Menzel (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#489

Because history is ours to protect and important for future generations

Stephanie Warren (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#491

The building should be retained for Art Gallery purposes only as specified by its' benefactor.

Rod Cameron (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#493

The McDougall is a beautiful and important asset that continues to be treated like dirt by the irresponsible few who are neglecting their duty to support this building and the city.

Stephen McGregor (Otaki Beack, 2023-01-22)

#494

I grew up in Christchurch and spent a lot of time in my teens visiting The McDougall, visitng shows for hours at a time. It was one of my favourite places to go in all of Christchurch and I love it still. It it so important to restore this bulding and bring it to life as an active place to visit.

Katherine MacLeod (Grey Lynn, 2023-01-22)

#497

We have lost so many valuable historical sites. Thus building is outstanding and a real picture of stunning architecture - a fabulous comparative to the hideous recent building in our city.

Sue Mehlhopt (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#498

I love going to galleries

Lesley Gilder (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#505

Please save our heritage art gallery so citizens and visitors can enjoy historic art works in an appropriate building.
The council makes me pay towards the cathedral which is not owned by the council. I would willingly pay towards this one!

Carol Carr (Christchurch, 2023-01-22)

#506

I think it is important to preserve as much heritage as possible and I think the McDougall is a wonderful atmospheric building in an amazing location and it would be so uplifting to see it filled with art again.

Devon Bishop (Dunedin, 2023-01-23)

#513

This is unacceptable and is misappropriation bordering on theft.

Mike Smith (Christchurch, 2023-01-23)

#520

I lived in Christchurch and even worked for a time at the McDougall, I think keeping it for displaying the older works and special exhibitions makes sense and I am saddened to see the suggestion that it will cease to be a public art gallery . When a gift is made to a city, the city needs to honor that agreement and not disrespect the original generosity that created that space. Otherwise the city should refund the descendants of the original donor to the sum of the donation in today’s dollars. If the city would prefer not to do that, they need to open the space as a gallery as it was intended to be.

Celeste Kautz (Fremont, 2023-01-23)

#524

I'm 30 and I've never been able to go into this amazing museum. It looks truly beautiful and I hope one day to be able to walk through.

#525

I love this Building and it was a unique building to be in undamaged in the earthquake it must be saved!

Debra Thompson (Christchurch, 2023-01-23)

#527

I have worked in the gallery. It has an interesting layout and would lend it's self to being a museum, to hold a collection of our history and artifacts. We are in the habit of demolishing older buildings in Christchurch. It must stop.

DAVID LLOYD (Southbridge, 2023-01-23)

#528

The Gallery was a gift to the city and should be retained for its intended purpose.

Toni Jones (Christchurch, 2023-01-23)

#530

This is a beautiful and functional art gallery space in a city which has lost so much of its heritage. Let's keep the permanent collection on view here rather than being stored away out of sight - that is such a travesty: keeping art out of view!!!

bridget scoular (christchurch, 2023-01-24)

#543

I was born and brought up in Christchurch and I am a patron of the arts .Most of all I believe we have to preserve as much of our architectual heritage as we can. Especially given, most of it was wiped out in the earthquake.

Merryn Corcoran (LONDON, 2023-01-24)

#544

#586

We should have this treasure back as an art gallery in our city.

Sarah Turpin (Christchurch, 2023-01-28)

#588

The McDougall Art Gallery was gifted to Christchurch for the purpose of displaying the art which was donated to the gallery. If a building is gifted for a specific purpose, then that wish should be respected wherever possible.
It is also a heritage building, so displaying historical art in the building suits its purpose very well.
If we do not do this, then other generous donors of historical art may well choose to sell their art overseas, rather than donating it to the citizens of Christchurch.
We already have an art gallery to display more modern art of various sorts. Let's keep the Robert McDougall Art Gallery for is original purpose.

Helen Johnstone (Christchurch, 2023-01-29)
