Parents have spent hundreds of dollars to prepare for this day all for it to be snatched because he defended himself. Im signing this petition because I believe in fairness. If there was a disciplinary consequence for his actions (which I’m sure there is in the handbook-5day OSS) that should be what is done. Especially for first offense, where a student is hit first, and then defended himself. Nothing is stated about being denied the chance to walk across stage so why would that even be an option. The 9th grader doesn’t lose anything if that nature so where is the equality? Is that what we’re showing and teaching our students? It’s been several fights at Central this school year and the students only received a suspension. Seems like it’s only the seniors receiving expulsion. Denorris is a great, well mannered young man. Never gives anyone any problems. Always does what he’s asked and I’ve also witnessed him volunteer his help to others. Denorris has maintained excellent academic and athletic records, and it is unjust to penalize him for defending himself in a situation where he was not the aggressor. If there is evidence proving that the 9th grader has a history of starting fights, then how can you punish the senior when all they did was defend themselves. Let's put it in a different perspective! Let's say a person has you held at gun point. Is it your fault that your being held at gun point? No! The gunman choose to start something and if you happen to have a permit to legally carry and your carrying your gun your gonna use it to defend yourself, because you didn't ask to be robbed or to be in the situation. So say you shoot the gunman in the shoulder to where he can survive and still live on. It would be wrong if you was the one who got arrested when there's video and evidence that he was the one trying to hurt you and rob you.Who's to say that in the fight situation that happened at the school was his fault? Unless the cameras clearly show him swinging first I believe that he should still walk. Who's to say that if he didn't defend himself and let the other student beat him, that he would still be here today. There's endless possibilities especially when our fight or flight responses kick in. The other student could've knocked the senior hard on the ground and make him hit his head a couple of times and cause him to had a brain bleed. What would yall be saying instead? Knowing people and their word of mouth they probably would be saying, " oh why didn't he defend himself?"

Letting him walk across the stage to get his diploma wouldn’t hurt at all. It’s not like he’ll be returning the next school year.
