Whilst I do support renewable energy. But this will disturb all visitors to Barnsdale daily and potentially lead to the closure of one of Horticulture’s most symbolic gardens created by a leading light to the nations gardeners.

Ben Marsh (Southampton, 2022-08-05)

#215

There are many better locations away from businesses and homes for such a development

Sheila Fletcher (Oakham, 2022-08-05)

#219

It will destroy all of our beautiful farmland and landscape. Solar panels can be built onto buildings instead.

Jennie Vanstone (Oakham, 2022-08-05)

#222

I have family/friends who lives in Exton and ride around the area, do not want it there so close to houses.

Samantha Bartels (Belton in Rutland, 2022-08-06)

#226

The current obsession with solar farms is not sustainable longterm at the cost of our landscape, environment, wildlife, and peaceful existence. I wonder how lucrative it is to build a solar farm on one's land and how much this plays into the landowners decision making.

Tanya Sweeten (Easton on the Hill, 2022-08-06)

#228

Whilst in support of renewable energy and the use of Solar, I do not believe that this location is the correct one for the project.

I'm signing because I strongly disagree with Exton Energy building a solar farm directly next to Barnsdale Gardens. I and my family regularly visit Rutland to enjoy the many leisure pusuits and the quiet of the countryside. We ALWAYS visit Barnsdale Gardens and have introduced many families to the Gardens and thus the county. It is through Barnsdale Gardens that we came to explore and enjoy Rutland. Building the solar farm next to the Gardens will destroy the peaceful atmosphere for us.
Furthermore, I strongly disagree with valuable fertile land being destroyed in this way. 81 Hectares ! The soil nutrients will be depleted, nothing will grow beneath the panels and hence no wildlife. You appear to proud of Rutland Waters and it's wildlife yet show little regard for this vast area that will soon become a desert.
Barnsdale Gardens is a very valuable tourist attraction for Rutland. The land in question is far too valuable - for the production of food, for nature and wildlife to flourish, - to be destroyed in this way. PROTECT BOTH.

Rossita Malinowska (Beckenham, 2022-08-06)

#232

This is not the first petition I have signed about this.
There is no need to take land for solar panels. There are plenty of brown sites and rooftops.
These companies get a discount for putting up these panels. They are not good for the wildlife at all.

Teri Browett (Nottingham, 2022-08-07)

#234

I value the peace and quiet when I visit the gardens.

Anne O'Farrell (Peterborough, 2022-08-07)

The solar farm is adjacent to several houses and would cause disruption to them. It is on farmland and would effect the wildlife and the company building it has no experience of the UK and cannot answer any of the questions asked. A no no

Rosalind Rowley (Oakham, 2022-08-07)

Barnsdale gardens is an important site promoting gardening established by the Late Geoff Hamilton & continued most successfully by his son Nick Hamilton who has expanded activities based on Geoff's ideas. . It must be preserved on environmental ground as essential to well being as more of the population use gardening for pleasure. production of home grown food & as a place of calm direct link with the natural world

Dorothy LESSEY (OAKHAM, 2022-08-07)

#244

Barnsdale Gardens are peaceful and relaxing gardens, with lots of wildlife, all of which could be lost if the solar panel farm is built nearby.

Lisa Pusey (Rushden, 2022-08-07)

These 'farms' are being developed just anywhere without consideration as to the impact on surroundings. Barnsdale Gardens are a legendary and heritage jewel that needs protection.

- Loss of graded agricultural land especially during a time when the need for such land to produce locally sourced food is clear for all to see

- Biodiversity and environmental reasons, not least the fact that the proposed site is directly
adjacent to a breeding Osprey pair (three chicks this year) and likely to be so for many years to come providing the site is not disturbed with plenty more Osprey pairs in the vicinity. However, not just just the Ospreys but a whole plethora of local wildlife will be negatively impacted especially by
the proposed fencing and battery banks.

- Proximity to Rutland Water - a wildlife sanctuary with 25,000 waterfowl (2019 - figures probably much higher now), a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and a RAMSAR site (RAMSAR Convention on wetlands of international importance).

- Close proximity to existing residential properties with the oft-cited issues which appear be linked to large battery parks

- Close proximity to Rutland's Owl and Falconry Sanctuary and the impact on the business

- Extremely close proximity to Barnsdale Gardens, one of the most important cogs in Rutland's burgeoning Tourist Industry and the certain impact on that business

Gerry Robinson (Burley, 2022-08-08)

This will have a great detrimental impact on Barnsdale Gardens business and other businesses in the wider Oakham, and Rutland community. People travel from all parts of the UK and overseas just to visit Barnsdale Gardens as it has always been an environmental leader with both Geoff Hamilton and Nick Hamilton in the forefront. I cannot state more strongly that this solar planning must NOT go ahead and needs to be looked at by the planning committee intensely.

Susan Clarke (Nantwich, 2022-08-10)

to place an energy farm next to Barnsdale Gardens would appear to be a singularly weird decision, that will be detrimental to not only the garden, but also to the many thousands of vistiors Barnsdale get eavh year

Any development should not impose any violation of the rights of adjutant property owners ,
A compromise agreement should be worked out to ensure Barnsdale gardens can remain open to visitors without interference and inconvenience.
Barnsdale Gardens is famous for millions of viewers and a prime source of sustainable gardening without the use of peat products.

Pam Hill (Nottingham, 2022-08-12)

#311

Barnsdale is beautiful, tranquil and a wonderful place of peace and for wildlife. Please keep it that way

Amanda Marr (Scarborough, 2022-08-13)

#317

This beautiful peaceful space is essential for both the physical and mental health of local people and visitors from across the country and International visitors too. Not only can we enjoy the stunning seasonal planting but also remember and appreciate the many years of hard work by Geoff Hamilton and his son Nick, but all the staff and volunteers who have kept his precious memory alive. So many of us tuned in every week to watch Gardeners’ World on the BBC. I have learnt so much over the years and the valuable courses available at Barnsdale Gardens have transformed my gardening skills. I now volunteer with a local charity in their Wellbeing Garden, please do not jeopardise this business, when there are so many other sites available that do not impact on our precious nature.

Linda Battle (Stamford, 2022-08-13)

Barnsdale means a lot to me as it was Geoff that first got me interested in gardening which has now become my main interest.

Susan Berry (MANSFIELD, 2022-08-13)

The gardens at Barnsdale as well as the wildlife need to be protected from detrimental development. People need to stand up to greedy corporations who think they can just do as they wish.

I am appalled that we could lose a national treasure: Barnsdale Gardens will forever be in my top ten places to visit and take visitors.
It is a treasure house of beauty, peace, horticultural expertise and history.

#324

I have greatly enjoyed my visits to the gardens and cafe.

Christine Lang (OAkham, 2022-08-14)

#325

I am signing this petition for the following reasons:
The proposal would pose a serious risk to the future viability of Barnsdale Gardening centre, danger migratory birds on their flight path to Rutland Water, the removal of productive farmland and will cause major disruption to the peaceful enjoyment of beautiful county

David Williams (Oakham, 2022-08-14)

#328

As a paid up member of
Friends of Barnsdale,My friend Sheila and I spend many visits during the year visiting the gardens to enjoy the change in the seasons, the tranquility and peace and to sit awhile on one of the many seats to quietly observe the wildlife and any lovely plants. We often enjoy a meal in their well stocked cafe served by pleasant and helpful staff. Please sight your solar farm a few field further away

Eric Abell (Oakham, 2022-08-14)

#330

This could be built on a brown field site. This is green land that could be used for agriculture. The company are only interested in profit.

Julian Lander (Colsterworth, 2022-08-14)

#331

I am pleased to have the opportunity to add my name to this important petition because Burley/Exton are being bombarded by projects which threaten the local natural environment. The following are examples of the stress locals are now experiencing on a daily bases.

a) Barnsdale Gardening Centre is a much valued and respected resource to gardeners and visitors nationwide and whose future should not be jeopardised but yet another locally detrimental development. In this instance causing noise pollution for local residents and businesses as well as a danger to local wildlife. The reflective nature of these panels to migratory birds whose flight paths cross the proposed site on their way to and from Rutland Water should be an important consideration.
This proposed development is also VERY close to at least two established Osprey breeding sites! One being the first Osprey nest in England since Victorian times. There could be a danger to young inexperienced ospreys during their their maiden flights close to their nests by easily mistaking their first sighting of water to be the reflective panels!

b) Large scale housing development, also threatens to overwhelm the current medical services and schools infrastructure in Oakham.

c) A Theme Park, in Ancient Woodland in close proximity to housing is being proposed by another large land owner with the introduction of hazardous wild species not seen in this country for decades.

Please say no to this planned developments.

Thank you.

Barnsdale Gardens provides a huge and positive environment. The plants and trees are a benefit to the environment and in addition attraction many birds, bees and insects. In addition Barnsdale is an established family business, giving joy to residents and visitors. Whilst appreciating alternative sources of energy are needed it should NOT be to the detrimental impact on flora an fauna. There is clearly a very real risk of solar farm companies using the 'future energy' needs as their way of destroying our land. Let's not overlook the positive environnent benefit of the gardens - absorption of CO2 and home to many plants and wildlife.

Beverly Pietralski (Leices8, 2022-08-14)

#338

The tranquillity of the Gardens has been a constant asset when visiting over a couple of decades as both my wife and myself have enjoyed the gardens.

Bryan Hollamby (Peterborough, 2022-08-15)

#340

As much as I believe in renewable energy, a solar farm of this size is not appropriate anywhere int the UK, let alone in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. The area around Rutland Water, Barnsdale and Exton is a big tourist attractions bringing many thousands of visitors to the area every year with the resultant benefits to the local community, this must not be destroyed.

Rupert Turton (Oakham, 2022-08-15)

#341

The location of the farm, which will effect local buisnesses and local homes.

#346

It would be tragic to loose this facility which provides so much pleasure and inspiration

Diane Corbett (Nottingham, 2022-08-15)

#348

Sustainable energy sources are increasingly vital and I support solar power development, but NOT to the detriment of existing businesses and homes. There are other places for solar panels to be placed if people would just give it a bit more thought. Wild birds and animals and their natural habitats should, and can, be protected in the quest for energy sources which are primarily intended to support our environment! Barnsdale Gardens is a haven for wildlife and people alike and deserves our protection.

Virginia Newling (Uppingham, 2022-08-15)

#350

There are already too many people on this planet. More and more power sources have to be found to sustain this exploding population. We cannot go on building more facilities for more people, at the expense of nature and breathing space. It has to stop. Now.

Lois Clark (Ashford, 2022-08-15)

#352

As a regular visitor to Barnsdale Gardens with my elderly mother we love the tranquility of the area. Once we had to slow the car on the road to the garden to allow a small group of deer pass . The impact of this installation on this area of natural beauty and on the wild life would be devastating. I do not understand why solar panels need to eat up our beautiful countryside when the rooftops in built up areas are completely under-utilised . To me this would represent a criminal act

Deborah Bird (Leicester, 2022-08-15)

#361

I’m signing because there is nowhere quite like Barnsdale Gardens. They help people to manage small gardens with achievable plans. It’s important that they continue to attract more people so that they can continue.
I’m all for renewable energy but not at the expense of a business of which there is no other like it. Noise will inevitably put people off, especially weddings, courses and coaches from around the country, besides individuals who come and are inspired to garden in their own homes and thereby taking all the benefits of mental, physical and wildlife back to their own lives and plots.
Please put the solar farm in another field.

Lydia Tebbutt (Market Harborough, 2022-08-16)

#362

It has taken decades to create the gardens and it would take a lifetime to recreate them elsewhere.
Solar farms can be build in a matter of months!
Please don’t destroy our heritage !

Amrik Sagoo (Nottingham, 2022-08-16)

#363

I am objecting to this proposed development involving an extensive solar panel installation and the environmental threat it presents to the proposed location for a number of reasons. Firstly, Barnsdale Gardens attracts tourists, tourism and visitors to our region. This merits consideration at a time when wealth creation is critical to the viability of the rural community.
Secondly, in my opinion and many of my friends and family who have been fortunate to visit, the gardens offer inspiration and tranquility in equal measure. There is a strong ethos of environmental awareness and the need to live in harmony with nature evidenced by the actions of the dedicated staff and through the impressive diversification of plants. I have always been impressed by the range and scale of wildlife attracted to the gardens.
Finally, I for one enjoy Barnsdale gardens because of the legacy laid down by Geoff Hamilton via the BBC Gardeners’ World programme. He and his TV series inspired many to either commence gardening or continue this pastime with renewed enthusiasm. That is an incredible achievement and worthy of consideration for this ill conceived development.
I accept the need for investment in renewable energy sources. However, the proposed location of this development will have a negative impact on tourism and a significant attraction for our region.
For these reason, I raise my objections.

Peter Pietralski (Ragdale, 2022-08-16)

#367

The scheme will decimate the wildlife in the area and in particular the wildlife (buzzards, red kite, owls currently finding their prey in that field and it stop deer, mount jack etc who use the field daily from entering and not just because there will be a fence.

Peter Davis (Oakham, 2022-08-17)

#370

I think this is a terrible location for a solar farm.

Sharon Miles (Peterborough, 2022-08-17)

I am a firm supporter of renewable energy but believe the site next to Barnsdale Gardens is inappropriate and would spoil an important garden within the history of gardening and ruin the peace of visitors and wildlife, for whom it's a haven
