I am appalled that the council are proposing closure of a school which has such a high number of SEND students. These kids are vulnerable and need stability. If oakfield closes then the impact will be wholly negative.

Oakfield is a wonderful and very important school for the local community. Making 200+ children from Oakfield, one of the most deprived areas on the island, walk 2+ miles to the other side of Ryde to go to school is awful.

Sarah Butterworth (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#6

My son Oscar was previously at greenmount because we lived in the area we moved and I kept him there for nearly 2 years and the walk everyday was horrendous. The best decision I made last year was putting him in oakfield primary his very happy there and thriving.

I don't want Oakfield School to close

To keep Oakfield Primary School open!

Zoe Butler (Isle of Wight, 2024-09-04)

#10

I am signing this because my step-son goes here and he is thriving more than the previous school he was in which was greenmount. He is always full of so much energy and willingness to further his knowledge at this school and gets on with all his teachers.

My son attends Oakfield. The staff at the school are amazing. It feels like family. Each child is valued in a wonderful environment that offers them many learning opportunities. It’s also a C of E school.

Jo Walls (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

My child attends this school they've been amazing

This school has been part of my life for a long time. I attended Oakfield in it's original setting in the 80s and then went on to Bishop Lovett where it now sits. It would be such a shame for it to close considering the longevity of the school, and a lot of history there.

Kim Newbery (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#17

I'm signing because oakfield has played a huge part in the betterment of my sons education.
He is thriving in his current setting and moving him I believe would be detrimental to his future.
With the damage done by social distancing during covid, forcing young children into unknown environments could be damaging to their future confidence.

Chris Mason (Shanklin, 2024-09-04)

Oakfield CE primary school provides the best education and support for each individual child within their care. The school values are embedded throughout every aspect of the school. These factors can not be measured through Ofsted reports.
My son is now in year 5, he missed out on so much school during the covid pandemic inparticular his reception year and to think he will now potentially miss out on his last year is devastating to him and our family. My youngest has just started his school journey 2 days ago. Oakfield primary has so much more to offer than can be measured.
This school is a community and it simply can not be taken away.

Emma Rust (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

My children have all attended Oakfield. Being SEND and going through difficulties at home Oakfield supported them in achieving so much and blossoming into incredible, confident and passionate little humans. I have also been blessed to get an opportunity to volunteer at Oakfield whilst I train as a primary school teacher and have seen first hand the hard work and dedication the staff put in every single day to ensure the children's overall wellbeing is supported. Children are more than statistics. They are real people with emotions, attachments, personalities and a community within themselves. The proposed move for my children to greenmount will also significantly impact my ability to get them to school every day due to a physical disability (yes it's 'catchment' but it's also quite a substantial walk especially for the younger ones). Oakfield should have NEVER been considered

My daughter would be devastated if she had to leave all her friends & would also be separated from her half brother & would make pick up difficult for her dad. Travel to the other side of Ryde would be a nightmare, travel costs would be expensive in these already difficult Financial Times

My child has just started school at Oakfield and I am fighting for him to have the very best start in Education possible

Marjorie Grist (Isle of Wight, 2024-09-04)

#29

My personal experience of this school is amazing. My eldest son has just moved on to high school after being at Oakfield for 6yrs plus including pre-school. My middle son is finally thriving after all the stresses of covid and now my youngest son has just started, I want him to have the same experiences and education as my older boys. Closing this school will not only be devastating to us but to our whole Oakfield community. Please help us save our school!!

Kirsty Rowley (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#31

I just can't believe that a school with our particular circumstances and with our demographics, could possibly be considered for closure/re-purposing. I fear the consequences of this on our children and their families, will be very significant.

Mark Vince (Sandown, 2024-09-04)

#34

I am signing because I have 3 children at Oakfield CofE school. My eldest is now in yr 6 and the school staff have been fantastic throughout his journey. The whole school (building) is fantastic. The staff and children have done a brilliant job of keeping it all looking great, with new artwork on walls and general improvements to certain areas where the children benefit from greatly.
If the school does close it will be a huge miss to the whole Oakfield family. Also if closed there will be no other public school within the large area of oakfield. (Other than the Catholic school). The school is needed! This decision from the LA makes no sense the the community. Why would they want to send children as young as 4, who have to walk to school, all the way to the other side of Ryde to Greenmount?!
Totally wrong decision picking this school.

Danielle Watson (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

My grandchildren go to this school and heartbroken that it may close.

Graham Rowley (Sandown, 2024-09-04)

#37

I’m signing because I work at this school in the SEND department and can’t imagine the impact this will have on our pupils and their families let alone the staff. We all want what is best for our children and this is not it.

Kerry Connolly (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#38

2 of my children attend this school both with send and 1 of mine as many other will struggle with the change, it took a lot with the change from there nursery to reception last year

Natalie Manning (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#39

The school shouldn’t be closed. It will have a huge negative impact on students.

Sophie Houghton (Isle of wight, 2024-09-04)

#43

This school actually has values, they actually live by those values.
We went around the school over 8 years ago for my son to attend and Oakfield was the 1st on our list of schools for him to go to. Then when my daughter was born we didn't hesitate to apply for her to go and we have been happy with her teachers for the 1st two years and were celebrating when we heard she has Mrs Rowe for year 2.
In short it's as close to a family environment as you could get with the modern day boundaries and I only wish my school would have been so engaging at this stage.
I know my daughter will be devastated if they close and I can imagine a lot of other children will suffer with the mental health side of things.

kendrick reeves (Ryde, 2024-09-04)

#45

How can you seriously consider this. Totally ignoring the educational needs of the 235 local children who attend this school.
I'm sure it would be different if one of your families children attend this school.

Kerry Fuller (Dudley, 2024-09-04)

#53

I’m signing because as a parent, staff member and being part of the local community I know the knock on impact closing this school will have on everyone. I see every single day how everyone who works within this school supports and puts their all into the education and well being on the children, parents and wider community. How detrimental it would be for the children’s, parents and staffs mental health. How the community that use the internet pantry will go hungry. Families having to walk a MINIMUM of 45 minutes, and I say minimum because some have smaller children who cannot walk fast, some live further away, some cannot afford buses. The council have seen a building… not the people. Not it’s children who are thriving with the care and education provided, not families who are supported and understood and not its staff members who give everything they have every single day to do their absolute best for every single child. This would be absolutely devastating.

Ellie Simmons (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#54

I am a teacher at this school and I am shocked at the announcement. I am concerned for all of our children and families who are now going to have to walk to 45 minutes to get to their new designated school. The children, staff and parents are all part of the Oakfield Family and this family cannot be broken apart. I really hope the decision is reversed.

Aimee Walls (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

It’s my childhood school ❤️

Sam Bull (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#64

My Son goes to Oakfield. It’s local to us and is a great school.
This is a careless decision by the council which could have a negative impact on so many local families having to travel further to a school that won’t have the space to accommodate them in proper classrooms.

Stuart Paul (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#65

My daughters go to this school and nursery and have come on leaps and bounds since they joined and have loved every minute of it the teachers have been such a wonderful help and caring towards them.

Casey Meredith (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#74

Oakfield deserves to remain open, fantastic school and staff

Edward Jones (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#75

To close this school that not only educates children, but also has a vital role in supporting their families and the wider community would be a travesty.

Vanessa Bright (Sandown, 2024-09-05)

#77

I’m an ex employee who still rates the hard work and dedication all the staff put into giving their pupils the best education and support that they possibly can. A thriving school with so much to give. Ludicrous decision to shut it down.

My niece and nephew go to this school the amazing staff have help them both so much it would be shame for this school to be taken away.

Heidi Smith (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

My daughter has just started in reception class. She moved over from little acorns nursery and if this school closes it will be detrimental to her education. She has SEN and 8f she had to go somewhere else I don't think she would cope.

Kelly Hayes (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#83

I feel very strongly about the closing of this community school closing.
All 4 of my children have attended this school and have thrived from not only the education provided but also the surroundings - there is so much natural beauty to offer a safe space when things get overwhelming. The community come together in this school at times and thus was proven during COVID times when the school opened to help those families who were struggling.
Oakfield has helped us massively as a family over the years and it would be devastating to see it close.

Kelly Browning (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

This school is amazing for SEN kids and the SATS results are not what is important. The staff are amazing, and it's totally wrong to close it.

Rachel Butterworth (Seaview, 2024-09-05)

#125

I am very much opposed to this ridiculous suggestion of closing such a wonderful school. Both of my daughters attended Oakfield Primary and my grandson has only just started!

Alison King (Ryde, Isle of Wight, 2024-09-05)

#126

I am truly shocked that this school is a closure option as there is so much positive to this school especially as a couple of other local schools look and feel run down and tired and this one is modern and well maintained.
My 2 older sons attended this school and my youngest attends now so closure to this school is personal. The school staff are loyal to the children and amazing, especially with my son’s dyslectic needs. The grounds and buildings some old some new are perfect for an enriching learning environment indoors and out. The grounds and woodland enable first hand learning on the natural world around them as well as good up to date classrooms for good education. Security is also on top form here with purpose built high fencing and playground space is well thought out. There is also local planning permission to build a further huge number of houses nearby and this school could offer additional children good quality education if that was to go ahead.
For us further travel would cause disruption to our lives both financially and environmentally as both us parents work and would have to rely on transport.

This is a move purely to gain a new building at the expense of the education and well-being of Oakfield children - many of whom are SEND.

This is shocking!
The local authority has invested heavily in this school.
The location of the school serves a very large area with a diverse background of people.
The economic and extra strain closing this school would be huge to local community resulting in a decline in the social and educational needs of children and vulnerable family’s that depend on Oakfield school.
As a family we will struggle with work and school balance if required to move school resulting in reduced working hours and a lesser income as a family, not to mention the extra burden of having to travel by bus or car putting mitre financial strain on already struggling families.
Church of England part funds the school and we believe that the values and identity that this teaches and promotes is the foundation of this country, it would be distressing to lose this cultural heritage.i work in the emergency services and see first hand how much support that this school provides to the community, with its food bank just to name one thing.
The school is fresh current and has a fantastic enriching environment with room to absorb other children. The SEN department is one of the best on the island, benefiting another of my children that is now a high achiever and very driven due to the start he had in education at Oakfield.
The social and economic effects within the community that closing this school would cause are very upsetting and distressing.

Ross Smallcombe (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

Ridiculous to close a popular school that serves the Elmfield and Oakfield area. It has a new building very recently, wonderful playing fields and very convenient for public transport. They should close St Mary's and combine it with Oakfield.

Mary McAlister (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

#188

In 2021 I completed a 2 week work experience for the princes trust at oakfeild primary school. They taught me so much about being responsible for children and I loved working there. The school is amazing and is brilliant for Children with all backgrounds and differences and it should not be closed down! They even have a forest area where children get to play, learn and explore. I am very sad to hear it may be closing down.

Emily Smith (Ryde, 2024-09-05)

Georgia Blues (Southsea, 2024-09-05)

#198

I’m signing because my child is in year 1 at oakfield. He is happy here and the outside space for the children is needed, other local schools do not have a substantial amount of green space utilised with the much loved forest school, sports and learning through imaginative play. Oakfield is also within a large local housing estate of low income families- most rely on walking or public transport which will not be easily accessible to the proposed greenmount.
