Revert Supershot rules for NSL2025
The Netball Super League has today announced that along with "key stakeholders,"a series of new rules and innovations are set to be introduced starting with the two-goal Super Shot!"
There's no information about who these key stakeholders are. We, the fans, were not consulted over this. There were no surveys carried out at NSL matches in 2024 to see if the fans wanted this. The clubs could have been asked to email their members to ask them for their opinions.
To make matters worse, EVEN THE HEAD COACHES WERE NOT CONSULTED. How can you be so entitled as to introduce something that affects every club without consulting the head coaches, players,.or fans.
The supershots is nothing more than a gimmick, and gimmicks are generally used to make something dull more exciting. Netball is definitely not dull and does not need making more exciting. If people want gimmicks, they can go watch Fast
Similar things have happened with cricket - they came up lots of gimmicks, but they stuck them all into T20 and kept the core game (Tests & ODIs) untouched so that fans can choose go to games with gimmicks, games without gimmicks, or both. If Netball fans want gimmicks, they can go watch Fast5.
This feels like nothing more than a poorly thought out idea to further move us into become a clone of the SSN following the reduction of teams, squad numbers, and Arena games.
There is no evidence to be found that shows that the introduction of Supershot in SSN made the sport "more interesting" or was even responsible for increasing spectator numbers. What it did do, was end the careers of fantastic players such as Caitlin Bassett, who was one of Australia's greatest ever shooters, but found herself without a club because every club wanted a GS that was great at Supershots, which as a specialist holding shooter, was not her style. Netball claims to be inclusive, but this is very much non-inclusive, as it forces teams to recruit shooters that can shoot from distance.
We call on The Netball Super League to withdraw their idea of introducing the Supershot until a full survey of netball fans has been conducted at this season's games, alongside players, & coaches.
