reduce the speed limit of wigan road
We the undersigned call for a reduction in the speed limit of wigan road from 40mph to 30mph.
Wigan road is a busy main road used by vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians on a daily basis. The current speed limit for the road through hunger hill is set at 40mph.
Local residents are petitioning for a change in the speed limit following the horrific accident that took place on the 3rd of September, an accident that has touched the whole community.
Two young children of 10 and 8 were crossing the road and were hit by a car. Both girls were air lifted to Manchester children's hospital. Charlotte aged 10 suffered a broken arm, broken teeth and a large wound on her leg. She underwent two operations and thankfully is now recovering at home. Lucy the younger of the two aged 8 sustained life threatening injuries including a fractured skull and swelling on her brain and skin loss on her legs. This strong little girl is fighting hard but still to date hasn't woken up from the accident.
This isn't the first accident to occur at this particular spot on Wigan road with 3 fatalities previously.
The current 40mph speed limit is putting residents young and old at risk. Studies show that driver's travelling at a higher speed have less time to identify and react to what is happening around them. The outcome of pedestrians hit by a car travelling at 40mph is 4 times more likely to result in death than those hit at 30mph.
How many more accidents will it take before a change is made?
Please show your support and sign below to make Wigan road safer for all.
