Petition for Immediate Reform of the Justice System

We, the undersigned, call for urgent reforms to the justice system in Ontario and Canada to address the following critical issues:

  • Overburdened Court System: The judicial system is currently overwhelmed, which delays justice and undermines fairness. Immediate action is needed to reduce the backlog and improve efficiency.
  • Judicial Case Review Groups: We propose the creation of specialized review groups composed of retired judges or judges in training to preprocess case materials. This would allow trial judges to focus on adjudication rather than administrative duties, enhancing judicial efficiency.
  • Lawyer Conduct Database: To uphold professional standards, we advocate for a database tracking lawyers' behaviors and complaints. Lawyers found guilty of misconduct should face immediate sanctions and fines to preserve the integrity of the legal profession.
  • Administrative Courts and Extended Hours: We suggest establishing electronic administrative courts operating from 11 AM to 8 PM with flexible session times to manage simpler cases, thereby freeing up resources for more complex judicial matters.
  • Timely Resolution of Cases: Implement the above suggestions to ensure swift resolution of backlogged cases, providing timely justice for all.
  • Reform of the Jury System:
    • Increase Daily Compensation: Raise the daily compensation to $100/day to cover basic expenses.
    • Expense Allowances: Introduce allowances or reimbursements for transportation, parking, childcare, and meals.
    • Employer Compensation: Legally require employers to compensate employees for jury duty or provide government stipends.
    • Travel and Lodging Support: Offer support for those traveling long distances.
    • Flexible Schedule: Permit part-time or weekend jury duty to accommodate personal and professional commitments.
  • Civil and Family Court Reforms:
    • Use masters, retired lawyers, or justices of the peace for preliminary case management to streamline processes.
    • Implement night or weekend video sessions for regular case updates to prevent delays.
    • Enforce heavy fines for those, especially lawyers, who delay proceedings or exploit the system.
  • Immigration and Citizenship Status for Offenders:
    • Propose to revoke citizenship or immigration status for individuals convicted of violent crimes, graft, or financial crimes post-18 years of age, with a focus on deportation for severe offences like murder.
  • Enhanced Protection Against Harassment:
    • Amend emergency motion provisions to include swift legal action against harassment, particularly for vulnerable groups under Sections 15 and 7 of the Canadian Constitution.
    • Impose significant fines on lawyers who engage in or enable harassment through deceit.
