Delay of Public Meeting
2022-02-18 13:04:47Thank you for your support and patience. We are working with our planner, Michael Barton, who has prepared a draft report in response to the Coland application for rezoning to allow for development of an 8-storey condominium.
We recently learned that the public meeting regarding this application has been delayed because the application is currently being updated. The revised application will respond to “a detailed list of items to update/review or improve upon,” provided by the City of Orillia. Once the updates have been made and shared with us, the planner’s report will be finalized in preparation for a public meeting. We will keep you posted on our progress, and will let you know of upcoming meeting dates as soon as we have the information.

Fundraising for an Urban Planner
2021-12-14 17:17:38Club 888 (by Coland Development) Does Not Belong on Driftwood Road
Location: 625 and 643 Atherley Road and 642 Driftwood Road
Club 888 Luxury Condos is a proposed 8-storey residential condo development containing 44 units. This is not a good fit for Driftwood Road on Orchard Point.
• The neighbourhood of Orchard Point already has far too much development, as it has been (inappropriately) designated as an intensification zone in the City’s official plan. Between Orchard Point Harbour (138 units), Sophie's Landing (46 units), and Mariner's Pier (42 units), the area has gone from approximately 40 units to 353.There is little infrastructure in place to support this kind of development. There is no direct access to Atherley Road from the proposed Club 888 development. Planned access is from Driftwood Road via Orchard Point Road. There is no traffic light at Orchard Point Road to ease the already dangerously congested intersection. There is limited access to services, parks and other amenities via active transportation (walking, cycling) or public transit, especially with the lack of sidewalks on Atherley Road.
• This proposed development is not compatible with the character of the surrounding community.
• This proposed development does not support environmental protection or the City of Orillia’s Climate Change Action Plan. The development will increase the phosphate levels of Lake Simcoe and contravenes sections of the Lake Simcoe Protection Act.
We are asking the City of Orillia to reject the rezoning application for this development. Since launching our petition, a number of concerned Orchard Point residents met with the mayor and our city councillors, along with city planning representatives to discuss our concerns. Although sympathetic to our cause, we were advised to hire an urban planner to represent our concerns. On Nov 30th, this article appeared in Orillia Matters where the question of hiring an urban planner was raised. Please give it a read as it provides good background to our cause:
We have secured an urban planner and are now seeking your support to raise $3390 ($3000 + hst) to pay for their services. They will prepare the appropriate documentation and attend a statutory public meeting (date to be announced) to provide a formal presentation to City Council on our behalf. A copy of the bill can be provided as requested.
Our objective is to demonstrate to City Council why this rezoning application should be rejected, especially related to existing municipal and provincial policies, so they will be able to confidently vote against it.
We have created an online petition, see link:
https://www.petitions.net/club_888_does_not_belong_on_driftwood_road and 192 concerned individuals signed the petition. If only ½ could donate, all we need is $35 each.
